This venue is about one hour from downtown Austin and parking is extremely limited, so we highly recommend carpooling.
Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center (formerly, Westcave Preserve) will be on your right at 24814 Hamilton Pool Rd. It is located just one mile past Hamilton Pool and two miles past Reimers Ranch.
Follow signs for visitor parking that lead you to the right. Class will be held in the South Classroom, once you park you should follow signs to the front desk. From the front desk, you’ll see us!
Bring your own lunch and drinks.
Bring a sack lunch–no lunch options nearby
Must bring a water bottle for the hike
Optional: bring your own mug for coffee/tea
Outdoor Component Description
This class includes a 2-hour hike down 150 stairs and back up. We’ll be walking slowly and will be in the shade 90% of the time. You’ll see fabulous things, and a camera, hand lens, or loupe will help you get up and personal with its beauty!
Dress for the weather and be prepared for the outdoor hike, including hike-appropriate shoes and clothes that can get dirty. Definitely bring a water bottle.

Nico is a Hydrogeologist with the City of Austin, involved in research, assessment, and education of groundwater, particularly the Edwards Aquifer groundwater tracing, geologic mapping, cave assessment and mapping, and recharge measurement.
Jacob Eickstead is a soil scientist currently working as a Vegetation Specialist for Texas Department of Transportation. He has mapped soils in vineyard and orchards in California and was a Natural Resource Specialist for the Railroad Commission of Texas inspecting coal mines for reclamation prior to moving to TXDOT.
